About This Place

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Cambridge, Cafe Mami offers an inviting taste of Japan through its carefully crafted menu featuring authentic Japanese and Asian flavors. Located at 1815 Massachusetts Ave, this cozy, unpretentious restaurant delivers hearty, comforting dishes that feel like a warm embrace—whether you’re dining solo, with friends, or family.

The culinary lineup at Cafe Mami is a celebration of traditional Japanese comfort food. Start with their silky Miso Soup, a classic starter that immediately soothes and prepares your palate for what's next. The menu boasts a variety of satisfying donburi (rice bowl) sets such as the flavorful Gyu Don (thinly sliced beef over rice), tender and savory Oyako Don (chicken and egg), and the fresh, delightfully delicate Salmon Don. For those craving a crispy texture, the Chicken Tatsuta Set and Curry Chicken Cutlet, especially with added cheese and fried egg, deliver layers of juicy, crunchy perfection paired with a rich, gently spiced curry sauce that captivates the senses.

Vegetarian options like Yakko Tofu, Fried Tofu Veggie Don, and vibrant Seaweed Salad showcase the kitchen’s attention to fresh, balanced, and healthful ingredients. The Yakiniku Salad Set, featuring thin, juicy slices of beef panfried with fresh onions in Mami’s unique spicy sauce atop crisp lettuce, offers a delightful explosion of flavor and texture. The Ninniku Chicken Set—tender chicken panfried with garlic and fresh lemon, simmered in a homemade ginger sauce—provides a luscious, aromatic punch that lingers pleasantly.

As reviewers have noted, Cafe Mami’s dishes arrive at just the right pace, allowing each bite to be savored fully. The generous portions mean the meal often stretches into two satisfying dining experiences, making it a fantastic value. Grace Z emphasizes the “legit Japan-style” vibe, where the atmosphere is as comforting as the food—perfect for those craving familiarity and authenticity in a casual setting. While some diners seek ultra-authentic washoku, many, like Spenser Guerin, appreciate the hearty, reliably good flavors that meet your heart’s craving for Japanese homestyle meals.

The ambiance here is quietly relaxed, creating an intimate dining environment that lets the food take center stage. Though the restaurant is tucked away and modest in decor, the warmth and attentive service elevate the experience. Walid VMK praises the “amazing” service and notes the tender, crispy chicken with excellent flavor that left a memorable impression, while Ace Someh highlights the popularity of the fried chicken curry rice, accompanied by a fresh salad and miso soup—the latter sometimes served without solid ingredients, but always delivering comfort.

In essence, Cafe Mami is a treasure for those seeking approachable, soulful Japanese cuisine in Cambridge. The menu’s variety—from spicy and savory sets to fresh tofu starters—ensures every visit can reveal a new favorite. For food lovers drawn to authentic tastes served with warmth and generous hospitality, Cafe Mami promises a fulfilling and heartwarming meal every time.

No longer cash only! This tucked away eatery serves delicious curries and chicken cutlets. Feels like a legit Japan-style restaurant where you can get a comfortable, familiar meal, by yourself or with friends and family. Delicious sesame salad and miso soup! The red pickled radishes with the curry were best. Attentive service and dishes are served at just the right pace. Plus enough for two meals!

Hearty japanese food. If looking for 'authentic' maybe go somewhere else but food is good and filling and hits the washoku needs.

It’s been 20+ years since the last of many many visits to my then favorite restaurant. It was in a mall with Japanese supermarket and shops. Now, the vibe is different and low maybe because Lesley college took over and repel customers and cast dim light inside the building. Food is great and kept up the high quality.

They reopen midday and 4 minutes past that all tables are full. Everyone is ordering the fried chicken curry rice. We did too and it was good. Our order came with miso soup and small salad. Miso soup did not have any solid ingredient in it. The curry sauce was amazing and i wish i have tried thait beef curry as it is more similar to authentic japanese curry rice. The waitress/hostess is doing her best to keep up with the orders, I just wish there were a better way of communicating to the chefs other than yelling all the time

The food portions are big and the taste is very good. The price is excellent and the service is amazing. It was a new experience for me and I really enjoyed trying Japanese food. I got to know a different type of cuisine and I would definitely recommend it. The chicken was tender, crispy, and had an excellent flavor. I would love to come back again

This restaurant is labeled as a Japanese restaurant, and although it serves Japanese-style cuisine, the flavors are likely to appeal to Koreans as well. Despite having only one server, they manage the work exceptionally well and are very friendly. Personally, I enjoy the pork cutlet curry set, and the Hamburg steak and Yaki don are also delicious. The restaurant is not large and has limited seating, so there may be a wait during lunch or dinner hours. Additionally, the prices are relatively affordable.

Great food at affordable prices. I’m so pleased that Cafe Mami is still open after all these years! Highly recommend. The lunch specials are a tremendous value.
